UsabilityOne - Card sorting

Card sorting

Card Sorting is a technique which delivers an intuitive Information Architecture (IA) based on how end users group and classify content. The process includes the development of navigation labels leveraging the terminology used by your audience.

The process can be summarised as follows:

  • Individual index cards are produced to represent key content on the website.
  • These cards are given to users, who are asked to group the cards and then label these groups.
  • Results are tabulated and analysed to guide the creation of a new IA.

This is a critical step in developing a usable site.
